Tolls on A22 might become reality in September
Updated: 19-Aug-2011

Tolls might become a reality in the Algarve as from September this year as news emerged on Wednesday that the new Government was considering charging tolls on the A22 road as from September.

At the time the Algarve Resident went to press, Lusa news agency was reporting that the Government was finalising the deal with the toll charging  company. The Government is hoping to publish the prices to be charged on the A22 in its official newspaper, Diário da República, by the end of this month.

A spokesman from Portagens na A22 Não (No Tolls on the A22) movement said: “The Government changes but the lack of common sense continues. To make drivers pay for a road that is already paid for is ridiculous.

“We have to continue our fight against tolls in the Algarve but now with renewed strength,” he said.

João Vasconcelos, one of the founders of the A22 users’ commission told the Algarve Resident: “The A22 users’ commission has already scheduled a meeting for tomorrow (Saturday) with the purpose of discussing new initiatives to continue the fight against the introduction of tolls on the A22.

“It is disappointing that the new Government has decided to go ahead with the tolls, which will only worsen the current economic and social climate in the region.

“If the government does not listen to our protests, we will have to take the matter to the courts,” he said.
