Left-wing politician João Vasconcelos, who set up the Comissão de Utentes da A22 (users commission), and who is against the introduction of tolls in the region, told the Algarve Resident: “We had a meeting on June 14 where we defined the strategies to be adopted in the future.
“However, we are expecting the new government to make a decision about the future of tolls in the region ,” he added.
João Vasconcelos said that Comissão de Utentes da A22 members have already prepared an injunction to present in court in case of the new Government decides to go ahead with the tolls.
He also said he wants to have a meeting with all the Algarve MPs elected for the new Government.
“We hope to arrange this for the end of June to discuss the tolls and to get everyone’s opinion.
“The requalification of the EN125 is still not completed, as the Government proposed, and it is not an alternative to A22 road, as I mentioned numerous times before.”
He added: “The introduction of tolls in the Algarve represents a threat to the economy of the region, which is already weakened due to economical crisis in the country.”
Faro Civil Governor Carlos Silva Gomes told the Algarve Resident: “The introduction of tolls on A22 road was suspended because of the resignation of José Sócrates’ former Government.
“The new Government will decide about this matter soon.”
