A fashion pioneer
Updated: 17-Feb-2012

Dear Editor,

Some 60 years ago, in those austere post war years, my mother would get out the wooden mushroom and darning needle to patch up holes in my grey socks with any wool she had available.

Much to my embarrassment, there were many times I went to school with socks with green, red or blue patches.

I have recently received the gift of a pack of black socks with brightly coloured heels and toes. Therefore, Mother, if you’re looking down on me, please accept my sincere apologies as I now realise that you were a fashion pioneer those many long years ago. The problem will arise when the odd sock disappears to that ‘black hole’ where only socks can go.

Can I mix-and-match or will I have to buy another pack of socks?

CHRIS WRIGHT, Tavira
