2011 World Cup winners Japan will be rare visitors to the region when the latest edition of the Algarve Cup kicks off on February 29.

One of women’s football’s longest established and most prestigious tournaments sees Germany take on Sweden, China and Iceland in Group A while serial champions the USA will be looking for revenge against their Far Eastern World Cup final conquerors in Group B which also features Norway and Denmark.

In addition, hosts Portugal have a chance to measure their progress on the international stage against Ireland, Wales and Hungary in the non-title Group C.

The 10-day competition is traditionally played out at smaller venues across the Algarve with Faro-Loulé’s Euro’2004 stadium staging the televised final - watch this space for more details.
