Environmental crimes
Updated: 15-Jun-2012

Owners of Quinta da Rocha, a plot of land set within the protected Ria de Alvor estuary, in the Portimão council, have been ordered by the court to replenish flora and fauna species and habitats destroyed during clearing works on the property a few years ago.

In February, Aprígio dos Santos, the administrator of the company that owns Quinta da Rocha, was condemned to two years suspended prison sentence for crimes committed against the environment between 2006 and 2010 and disobedience.

According to the Grupo de Acompanhamento da Ria de Alvor, a group of environmental associations monitoring the Ria de Alvor, Loulé’s Administrative and Fiscal Court has determined that no work can be carried out at the property for 10 years to allow the replenishment of estuary species.
