Loan players to be banned?

A general meeting of the Portuguese Football League has voted in favour of a ban on loan players within the same league. How this will affect Olhanense’s loan-back of goalkeeper Fabiano Freitas, who was sold to FC Porto for €1.2 million, is unclear. The Algarve management believe that the agreement is not covered by the recent measure as it was agreed several months ago and because if implemented, other situations - for example, the loan of Ruben Amorim to SC Braga by Benfica - would also no longer be valid. There is always the possibility of Fabiano’s contract with FC Porto not being registered, thus circumventing the recent decision of the League. Rio Ave would be the worst affected as they have already secured the loan of four players. The decision to ban loan players has yet to be ratified by the General Assembly.
