What about Benafim?

Much has been written about the Pêra development in your news and letters sections, but about that so-called luxury resort that is planned for the stunning location of Benafim with the Rocha da Pena site nearby?
Are readers not worried about the destruction that will cause? Is the belief that it will create jobs for the local, impoverished population enough to keep everyone happy?
Well, I for one doubt this project for the upmarket tourist will be bursting with activity and high accommodation levels...
It’ll just be another beautiful spot in the Algarve destroyed in the name of unnecessary tourist accommodation.
If the aim is to create jobs and keep unemployment levels down, then I think those in power are not thinking long term. Short-term, yes, there’ll be jobs for thousands of people, but what happens next when tourists are not enough to keep revenue up and the investment going? There are plenty of these so-called luxury developments in the region... most standing empty for most of the year with staff cuts happening all the time.
