Tolls: there is no getting it right
Updated: 20-Jul-2012
Upon entering Portugal via the Guadiana International Bridge, citizens in foreign plated cars are directed by road signs to a car park, where the new toll payment machines have been installed.
However, few drivers know how to proceed with payment and more often than not the entire EP support team has to get involved to explain the system.
The new equipment allows for the registration of the driver’s bank card and its association to the number plate, which is photographed by an automatic device.
Drivers who had opted to buy pre-paid toll titles were also complaining that payments in cash were not accepted. A Spanish citizen interviewed by Lusa news agency said: “This is all very complicated. Why couldn’t they just install a normal toll system, where you pay as you go along?”
The Algarve population at large is against the tolls and several regional entities have been fighting for their suspension.
