€10 million worth of damage
Updated: 27-Jul-2012

Tavira Mayor Jorge Botelho has said that the fire damage in the council is estimated to be more than €10 million, according to a preliminary assessment by the câmara.

“Our initial predictions, following groundwork by câmara officials, conclude that the damage is very high and upwards of €10 million,” he said after a meeting in Lisbon on Tuesday with the inter-ministerial commission for support for forest fire victims.

Fire victims need support now

“Communities need help from the government now, not next week.” These were the words of PS opposition leader José António Seguro during his visit to the region this week.

Although he praised the efforts being made by both Tavira and São Brás de Alportel Câmaras to support their affected communities, “the councils’ lack of financial resources does not allow them to do more. The government needs to act now and help these populations,” he said.

Câmara officials are currently assessing the damage caused by the fire among the populations. The lengthy and complex operation will lead to a report being made to enable the municipalities to request the declaration of state of public calamity.
