Strongly influenced by the painting techniques of Rafael, Botticelli and da Vinci, Bill Bate’s underwater figures are surrounded by a nebulous, smoky, aurora.

Using exquisite brushstrokes, the tight realism of the human form is in sharp contrast to the loosely-defined hazy background.

One of Britain’s most celebrated artists, his paintings have been exhibited in Venice, Milan, Galeria de l’Europe in Paris, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

Previously unseen in Portugal, Galeria Côrte-Real near Paderne provides an opportunity to view his elegant paintings.

Complimentary wines and summer savouries are served on the gallery’s garden terrace at weekends.

The gallery, signposted from Paderne, Boliqueime and Ferreiras, is open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Call 912 737 762.
