From black grapes to orange trees
Updated: 14-Sep-2000

To add to the general concern of the financial viability of the orange crop in the Algarve (Algarve Resident, September 1), could I please add to it by questioning why, at the eastern end near Tavira, farmers have destroyed many dozens of acres of a low-value black grape crop in the past two years and replaced it with thousands of orange trees that will eventually yield an even lower financial return?

As an incidental by-product, they are using all 'our' water so we, and our neighbours, are having to purchase water or lower our borehole pumps as we cannot compete with their three boreholes of some 300 metres which feed this new 'valueless' crop.

Patrick D Allen, Moncarapacho
