Look across the Atlantic
Updated: 09-Aug-2002

I read with interest your article about the slump in tourism. I understand Germany is not in the best of shape economically and people in Europe as a whole are careful in spending their hard-earned money. I wonder why you do not look across the Atlantic to Canada?

My wife and I have been to Portugal for eight to nine weeks for the last five years and have booked February and March 2003 already. Every year, we have encouraged friends of ours and they visited Portugal as well for at least a minimum of four weeks.

The Canadian dollar at the moment does not fare well against the euro, but we feel Portugal is still a good deal compared to Florida, USA. Our travel agent here in Kitchener, Ontario, is doing a fine job promoting your lovely country. I personally have steered business to him every year, because people I come into contact with always wonder why we are going to Portugal again and again.

One thing Portugal can do is perhaps advertise your country as a great alternative for a Canadian winter. You will see us in 2003 there for certain again – it makes it for a shorter Canadian winter.
