Dear Editor: Re: Merrylegs kennels
Updated: 27-Jun-2007
In response to the letters over the last two weeks (Re: Merrylegs kennels).
Gordon Todd: “The new plans appear to accommodate the noise problems.” In other words, the facility does not accommodate the noise problems and the new plans have been categorically rejected as per the letter from the Câmara dated 21st June 2007. The noise will not, and has not been, constrained. In other words they haven’t got planning permission.
If they haven’t got planning permission then they haven’t got an operating licence from the Ministry of Agriculture – have any of you seen it displayed (this does not mean the veterinary licence).
Geoff and Sharon, Almancil: “Hydrotherapy” – they are not licensed to perform this treatment in Portugal. “Help the community” – we are trying to close this noisy facility to help the community (mostly Portuguese) of Areeiro rid of these noisy animals which the owners have admitted they don’t know how to keep quiet.
Susan Goodfellow: How can she comment on the level of noise if: “she does not live in the area”? Also, “How difficult it is to have a project passed” in other words there is no planning permission. Also she states: “We have received complaints in the past about our dogs barking” no doubt if their dogs bark at their home and they don’t stop them, then they will bark on somebody else’s premises when left. “Barking dogs are very much a feature in the Algarve”. Areeiro has its own fair share of barking dogs but it also has the added noise from this illegal facility which could be well over 15 dogs in one place. This barking also incites the other legal dogs to make additional noise.
Shelagh and Alan Carter: “The neighbours who are complaining must have sharp hearing”. The neighbours do not need sharp hearing all 50 plus have signed two petitions to complain about the noise coming from the establishment and the owners do nothing to stop it. Dogs, on many occasions, have barked continuously for three days.
