Bowls Portugal’s President Amadeu Gil da Rocha and Vice President Chris Maloney, who set up and developed international bowling in Portugal, announced their retirement at the AGM on November 24.

With Bowls Portugal on the verge of major expansion, Amadeu and Chris felt it was appropriate for them to hand over to a new and younger team.

In paying tribute to the massive contribution which Amadeu has made over the years in putting Portugal on the international bowling map, and especially as the first non-British President of the European Bowling Association, a post which he graced for eight years, he was hailed as someone who would be impossible to replace.

With the new bowling club at Luz and the Spanish club at Isla Canela both recently joining the Federation, the way is now open to enlarge and broaden the scope of Bowls Portugal, the sole representatives of World Bowls in Portugal.

After their recent Test Match against Spain, sponsored by euroFinesco, where the Portugal team included members of four clubs (see Algarve Resident, November 19), the Federation was anxious to encompass all comers in the management structure, and this was reflected in the election results of the AGM, where officers were elected from three separate clubs.

John Hewitson (Vilamoura) was elected President of Bowls Portugal, Nick Roberts (Luz) Vice President and Tony Gilbert (Vilamoura) Secretary, and who make up the Management Committee.

On the General Assembly Committee, Alison Roberts (Luz) was elected President, David Labanti (Vilamoura) Vice President and Mary Banks (Valverde) Secretary, while the Fiscal Committee will comprise Stewart Banks President and Terry Kerr Vice President (both Valverde) with Kate Hewitson (Vilamoura) as Secretary.

The newly elected President John Hewitson stressed that his objective was to listen to the views of Bowls Portugal members and to encourage all bowlers in Portugal to join the Federation in order to strengthen the cooperation between, and friendliness of, all lawn bowlers throughout the country.
