Great concern over attacks on Police 20/4/2001
Updated: 27-Apr-2001

António Cartaxo, Faro representative for the Associação Sócio-Profissional da Polícia (ASPP) has expressed "great concern" over the rise in attacks on uniformed policeman.

He said: “I am profoundly worried by a situation that has been heightened by the attacks on members of the PSP on active service in Amadora and three recent attacks in the Algarve in Olhão, Faro and Portimão.”

Sr Cartaxo emphasised the government was not sufficiently aware of the gravity of the situation over what he described as “revenge attacks on members of the PSP.” He is calling for both the introduction of a risk subsidy and insurance policy for PSP personnel, plus the introduction of a law that makes attacks on police officers a public crime.

To further the cause, Sr. Cartaxo is to organise a future protest by PSP officers outside the offices of Faro Civil Governor Fialho Anastácio.
