New British ambassador
Updated: 16-Apr-2004

Mr John Buck has been appointed as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Portuguese Republic in succession to Dame Glynne Evans DBE CMG, who is retiring from the Diplomatic Service.

Mr Buck, 41, will take up his new appointment in September 2004. He is married with two children and has already enjoyed a successful career in the Foreign Office, with some challenging posts. Until recently, he was Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Iraq. He has worked in the FCO/No 10 as Head of the Communications and Information Centre and has worked in Nicosia, Cyprus and Sofia in Bulgaria.

Mr Buck is already familiar with Portugal – he was the Head of Chancery in Lisbon between 1988 and 1992 – and is said to be looking forward to returning to the country.
