| Number One - Jo Jo - Get Out

A singer, a songwriter and a natural performer – at just 13 years old – pop stars are getting younger and younger these days! Usually I write about the artist’s background, but how can I relate the life story of a girl who only left her nappies the other day? I can say that Joanna Levesque, aka JoJo, has been performing since the age of two. Born to a church soloist and trained musical theatre performer, JoJo grew up surrounded by music. She sang to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Etta James when she was still learning to walk. She claims that when she was two she would jazz up nursery rhymes.
Eager to perform in venues other than her living room, JoJo searched for her first big break. She found it in a small newspaper clipping that advertised an audition for an American programme, Kids Say the Darndest Things. Her soul and passion left the producers speechless and she was immediately given a spot to perform. When the show’s host, Bill Cosby, asked her to sing something, JoJo belted out a show-stopping rendition of Aretha Franklin’s Respect, which earned her an overwhelming response from the audience – at the age of seven.
But her big break came after her appearance on America’s Most Talented Kid. Although she didn’t win, an audience member approached her after the show and introduced her to producer Vincent Herbert (who has worked with Destiny’s Child and Toni Braxton). She later signed with Blackground Records, whose founder, Barry Hankerson, compared JoJo to his late niece, Aaliyah. This girl possesses a rare talent that has enchanted talk show hosts, celebrities and audiences in America, and now she is heading for Europe.
Her debut, Get Out, is a catchy break up song with an R&B feel to it. I must say that for a 13-year-old she has got a good pair of lungs on her. Watch out Britney!
