Eighteen signs point to hazardous highway
Updated: 22-Feb-2002

A report completed in July 2000 on the hazardous state of the EN125 has only been revealed now. It identifies 18 points on the road from Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António classified as serious or very serious risk situations. The conclusion of the report: “The general rule is road signs are in a poor state and need to be replaced.” No explanation has been given to explain why the report has been lingering so long at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The EN125 is statistically the fourth most hazardous road in the country in terms of accidents. Many of the signs are either inadequate, misleading or contradictory and most of the traffic lights – particularly in the Lagos to Sagres stretch – are not working properly. This is the latest attack on road safety. Earlier this month a former GNR road patrol commander, Lourenço da Silva, who oversaw major road safety operations for 30 years, accused the government of “making false promises” on the matter through “false propaganda.” His most controversial remark was that the much-vaunted surveillance helicopters used at the height of the “Zero Tolerance” campaign were useless. Lourenço da Silva told the Portuguese weekly, Expresso: “It is not possible to identify or photograph traffic situations with these helicopters. Neither now nor at any time.” He went on to say patrol cars had not received the much publicised multibanco machines for automatic paying of fines, nor are they connected to the Direcção Geral de Viação’s database.
