Residents fight to protect greenbelt

They claim that the substation is located in a greenbelt area and is only 300 metres from the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. The substation is due to provide the power for a new development in Quinta do Lago, according to local resident Patricia Peters, who said she is concerned about the amount of pine trees that have been felled since work began.
It is believed that the site was selected because there were few residents but nonetheless they are indignant that the câmara did not inform them that this substation was due to be constructed.
When residents, both Portuguese and expatriates, contacted Loulé Câmara President Seruca Emídio last week, he allegedly told them that he would issue a licence in principal as an actual licence takes time to process.
The Resident contacted Loulé Câmara to clarify the situation and made a request to see a licensing agreement between EDP and the câmara — no response has been received.
At the time of going to press, Patricia Peters informed The Resident that building stopped around noon on Friday and has not resumed since. “We do not know what this means” but she said she did not believe the construction has stopped completely.
