THE NINTH annual Scruffts Dog of the Year Show, increasingly popular with the expatriate community, was held on Sunday, September 16 at the Fatacil fairground in Lagoa.

This year’s event was opened by the new British Consul, Celia Edwards, who said that it

was a pleasure to open Scruffts 2007 after only seven weeks in office.

“I hope that it will help to raise awareness of all the abandoned animals in the Algarve,” she said.

Linda Pixley, an organiser of the event and President of the Association for Protection of Animals in the Algarve (APAA),

told the Resident: “We are very pleased that more Portuguese people are attending each year as well as the expatriate community.”

This year there were 17 judging classes, for mixed breed and pedigree dogs, including best pup, best 6 legs, waggiest tail and best in show. As usual, there were cups and prizes, which were offered by Royal Canin this year for all winners.

An agility course was available for owners to compete with their dogs while the main show was on.

Judging the main Scruffts show this year was Salvador Janeiro, Portugal’s representative from Royal Canin, and Georgie Saffin Costa from the Portuguese Canine Club. Returning as main ring announcer and compare was Ian Reddin from Radio Racal.

In addition, there were over 20 different stalls offering all the services one could need for man’s best friend. Services available ranged from Pet insurance to grooming, pet supplies and photography. Food and drink was available as were craft stalls selling jewellery and greeting cards.
