Many will have seen Adriano dos Santos Pereira pushing his wheelchair from his home in Ferreiras into Albufeira, some six kilometres each way. He is sometimes aided up the hills by his brother on his pushbike.
Johnny, who performs in the Old Town square in the mornings and also at his jazz restaurant bar, Johnny Hooper’s Saxophone Bistro, has been raising funds to get Adriano an electric wheelchair to make his life somewhat easier. During his performances on the square, every single donation into his open sax case goes straight to the fund.
Johnny was interviewed last month on DJ Owen Gee’s Sunday programme on Kiss FM to highlight the fundraising.
A couple, who preferred to remain anonymous, immediately phoned in and offered their own electric wheelchair which they no longer used.
However, it wasn’t suitable for Adriano and the age of the chair meant the battery didn’t last his journey.
But the good news is, during one of Johnny’s performances in the square a few weeks ago, a Scottish man called John Thompson, who is the managing director of Fairprice Mobility in the UK, offered a new electric powerchair at a much-reduced cost and is shortly planning to transport it to the Algarve.
The generous offer means that Adriano will soon be getting his chair in time for the hot summer months.
