ALGARVE SPORT ROUND-UP: Quantum leap

During Monday’s qualifying sessions Italy’s Audi TP52 powered by Q8 adapted best to the changeable conditions, returning to port ahead of El Desafio and Cristabella with Bribon and Artemis placed fourth and fifth in the 15-strong field respectively. Perfect conditions greeted the first day proper of this sixth and concluding stage of the Europe-wide competition, Bribon taking top order ahead of Russian surprise package Synergy and closest overall title rivals Quantum Racing.
The at times faltering wind still held up on Wednesday, allowing the jointly Portuguese and Spanish-crewed Desafio to take up the running with Argentina’s Matador and Platoon Team Germany claiming the day’s other individual honours. Conditions then deteriorated leading to the cancellation of Thursday’s program while only one race became possible on Friday. Here Quantum grabbed a decisive third place, enabling Doug De Vos, Fred Howe and Terry Hutchinson to accumulate the necessary points to celebrate the overall 2008 Audi MedCup title on America’s behalf. In terms of the Portugal Trophy, Matador and Platoon’s promising challenges were snuffed out on the final day as Quantum also added the week’s silverware to their trophy collection, becoming the first team to win three stages on the circuit.
At the closing ceremony it was announced that the competition is certain to return to the Algarve city in 2009, but before then more high seas action will be on view in Portimao as the P1 Powerboat world championship returns this weekend.
