PORTUGUESE animal rights association ANIMAL has condemned the Victor Hugo Cardinali circus after one of its supporters sent photographs showing the collapse of an elephant in Tavira on September 24.

A Dutch resident in Tavira, who asked not to be named, told The Resident: “I was walking my dogs in the early morning and wandered over to the circus animals because all of the tents had been dismantled and no-one was around.”

She said that one of the smaller elephants collapsed while she was there.

“I decided to take photos and then I could see that the animal was in distress and couldn’t get up, so I knocked on the door of a circus caravan and a woman came out,” she said.

“Eventually the woman thanked me for calling her but she told me to leave quickly before she went to get help for the animal.”

A Resident reporter visited the circus, which has since moved to Faro, but no-one was available to give any comments about this incident.
