65th Tour of Portugal

Portugal’s version of the Tour de France took to the road in Albufeira on August 6 and will finish in Viseu next Sunday, August 17. A total of 136 riders representing sixteen teams are contesting the 1,700kms that make up the eleven stages of this, the 65th edition of the ‘Volta a Portugal’. Favourite is last year’s winner, the Dane Claus Moller, who will be closely pursued by fellow Maia Milaneza MSS rider, Fabian Jeker. The Swissman won the Joaquim Agostinho Trophy in 2001 and has already been successful in the Tours of Austria and Romania this year.

Portugal’s hopes rest with 2000 winner Vitor Gamito and veteran Orlando Rodrigues, who won back-to-back races in 1994 and 1995. Joaquim Agostinho, after whom the winner’s trophy is named, is the most successful rider in the Tour’s history, which began in 1927.

Victorious in 1970, ’71 and ’72, legend has it that he was pedalling along an Alentejan road, minding his own business, when the main peloton overtook him, he joined the race and promptly won! Whether this is fact or fiction I don’t know. One truth is that only the hardiest of riders will finish next Sunday in what are probably the most testing conditions for many a year. S.B.
