Tourism expected to recover
Updated: 30-Dec-2009
The Algarve Tourism Barometer is a document produced by the ERTA every year after collecting responses from a panel of local politicians, businesspeople and other dignitaries in the region.
Around 32.2 per cent of those questioned believe 2010 will be a better year for tourism in the Algarve, 40.7 per cent say the sector will remain the same as last year and 16.9 per cent say that the worst is still to come with 6.8 per cent saying the tourism industry will be severely affected.
The remainder either didn’t have an opinion or didn’t respond.
The panel says that the Algarve should invest not only in the traditional markets, such as the UK, Ireland, Germany, Holland and Spain, but also Eastern European countries, such as Russia, the Czech Republic and Poland, and Scandinavian countries.
Spain is indicated by 47.5 per cent of the panel as the country expected to bring Portugal more revenue this year, followed by the German market according to 35.6 per cent of those questioned, Portugal (say 33.9 per cent), Holland (27.1 per cent) and the British market (23.7 per cent).
For 2010, 45.8 per cent say the Algarve should see a growth in nautical tourism, while other tourist products such as beach and sun, golf and residential tourism should remain the same.
