GNR owed money
Updated: 23-Jul-2010

Police officers specialising in the protection and rescue of people who find themselves in dangerous situations have not been paid their allowances since last year.

According to a report in Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manhã, there are officers from the GNR’s Protection and Rescue Intervention Group (GIPS) who are owed close to 2,000 Euros.

In total, the debt is put at around one million Euros.

A spokesman for GIPS said: “At present, we need to be focused on helping fight fires but it is not easy to keep morale high when faced with this situation.”
