The Algarve Stadium would have received hundreds of supporters of both English teams.
Tomorrow’s (Saturaday’s) Rugby Union Super Cup final between the Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons at the Algarve Stadium has been cancelled at the last minute.

The decision has been taken by both clubs following alleged irregularities that surfaced in relation to the event promoters.

A spokesman from the Newcastle Falcons said: “Despite having received the necessary approval from both the English and Portuguese Rugby Football Unions and from the stadium itself, ourselves and Sale were made guarantees by the promoter which have not been met.  It is with great regret that we have been forced into making the joint decision along with the Sale Sharks to cancel this game, especially with so many of our supporters having committed to travelling over.”

The spokesman added: “The supporters will be contacted and refunded in full, but to protect our own interests and those of our fans and club partners, we have unfortunately had no alternative but to cancel the fixture.”
